The castle was built between 1679 and 1683 by Count Philipp Gaston Wolf von Wolfsthal who hade made a good fortune during the battles against the Turks .
Around 1735 the Prince-Bishop of Speyer, Cardinal Hugo Damian von Schönborn, lived in the castle and ordered renovations to the building. The most notable of these changes was the painting of a fresco-hall by Italien artist Giovanni Francescho Marchini.
Until the 1970s the building was more and more neglected and came into disarray and pretty bad shape. My parents, Marina and Hilmann von Halem, purchased the estate in its desolate state in 1979 and we have been rebuilding and renovating the castle since then. For this work we received the German national prize for historic preservation in 2004.
